Kaylee's story

Kaylee's story
Kaylee Maendel grew up in a Hutterite colony in southern Manitoba. She remembers a childhood that overflowed with outdoor adventure. She spent her days playing in the oak forests crowding the Assiniboine River Valley, following streams, making bonfires and building her own world of pretend villages.
But when Kaylee was in her mid-teens, that childhood magic was shattered by vicious online harassment. While living with depression, anxiety and thoughts of suicide, photos of her self-harm scars were shared online. This painful experience led her to call Kids Help Phone (KHP).
“I remember apologizing for my anger, which was the result of frustration, helplessness and terror. A calm, reassuring voice on the other end said, ‘You don’t need to explain or justify your feelings. You are allowed to be angry.’”
When Kaylee sank deeper into despair and began to believe that suicide was the only option, she contacted KHP again. She shared her thoughts with a professional counsellor at KHP and was relieved not to be judged.
“They didn’t make a fuss or scold; they just said, ‘That sounds lonely. I’d like to ask you to do a safety check, if that’s OK with you. You’re allowed to say no.’”
For Kaylee, the counsellor’s non-judgmental support and help in navigating/managing mental health struggles using strategies and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) skills gave her something she needed most: a sense that she was seen and heard. It was, as she puts it, a “candid acknowledgement of the human on the other end. Not a statistic or crisis, just me.”
Today, inspired by the support she received from Kids Help Phone, Kaylee is a strong advocate for youth mental health. She shares her story publicly and hopes to one day become a mental health professional supporting people in Hutterite communities.
“Together, we can create a domino effect for positive change, as Kids Help Phone has done for me and other young people across Canada,” she says.
Alexi's story

Alexi's story
At just 13 years old, Alexi faced life-altering challenges after a stroke, leaving him with visible and invisible struggles.
His dad didn’t know how much he was hurting, despite them being so close.
When he began having scary thoughts and feelings, he called Kids Help Phone.
At Kids Help Phone, Alexi found someone to listen and guide him, giving him tools and resources to cope.
His father, Daniel, shared: “I may not have my son today if it weren’t for Kids Help Phone. The support Alexi received made a life-changing difference for him and our family.”
Adam's story

Adam's story
Every year for the past 22 years, the Kavelman family has participated in BMO Walk so Kids Can Talk. With every step, they think about Adam.
In May 2000, Adam Kavelman died by suicide at just 19 years old. A talented artist and an architecture student who was beloved by all who knew him, Adam had a bright future ahead of him. But he struggled in silence with depression and anxiety.
Following his death, his parents, Bob and Sue, and his sister, Meghan, knew they wanted to find a way to honour his memory and help break the stigma around mental health. They soon learned about Kids Help Phone and hosted a golf tournament to raise funds for the organization. Then, in 2004, they started walking in BMO Walk so Kids Can Talk and never looked back.
Over the years, the family has raised an incredible $160,000 and counting, to help other young people like Adam access support in their most critical moments. The Kavelmans are beyond grateful and thankful to all their family, friends, and colleagues for their ongoing love and support and for making this possible!
“We want kids like Adam to be able to just talk. That’s why we’re such proud supporters of this event and organization,” says Meghan. “Too many young people feel alone in their struggles, but no one should ever have to feel that way.”
